The Heavens Declare

September 25th, 2011 by Kim

As I mentioned before, one of the things I love about the desert is the vastness of the sky.  My mother use to say that the ceiling always seemed “high” here where the dry air can create such a crispness that you can see for miles. This is very present during our monsoon season when storms come in unleashing an amazing power.  Where we live, we sometimes don’t experience the rain, but we can see them moving across other parts of the valley. The picture below was taken on one such occasion, where we watched the storms move around us.  It did provide me the opportunity to sit in awe of the heavens.  When I held my camera up, the words of Psalm 19 came into my head…

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Psalm 119:1 NIV

It just seemed so apropos to what I saw.  The glory of God being shown through the power of His creation.  It was like the hand of God just swept across the sky.  I was so ever thankful to be able to witness and capture such a moment.

Beauty

September 21st, 2011 by Kim

I was reading the article, “The Beauty Seeker”, by Dewitt Jones in the October issue of Outdoor Photographer, where Mr. Jones talks about capturing beauty as a daily photo assignment.  It got me thinking about how often we go about our day not see the beauty in the world.  Things that, given a second look, will show beauty we did not notice before.  I live in the desert, and I grumble often about the lack of beauty.  How easy is it to see what we lack rather than the blessings that surround us.  What I see daily is brown, sun, heat…more heat, and more brown.  I often wish I could live in an area that was more this or that where the things that I say are beautiful, surround me. If I truly look at  my surroundings and put forth an effort, I may just find beauty in the most unlikely places….like the desert.

My name is Kim and this is my journey as a photographer.  I am hesitant to call myself a photographer as I have SO much to learn, and I only do it as a hobby.   I have been, however, in love with all things photo related since I was in High School.  It is a passion of mine to go out and capture God’s creation through my camera lens.  This blog will hopefully chronicle that, as well as all the new things I am learning.   So sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and join me on this photographic journey.

 This picture was taken on a hike in the White Tank mountains and is on of my favorite photos.
 It is one that reminds me how beautiful the desert really can be
(especially in the Spring where for a short time it is green), and how big and open the desert sky is.
